Italy. (See Map of Italy). Surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan landscape and set up high on a hilltop (334 m), one can experience the beauty and rich historical significance of San Gimignano's 14th and 15th century architecture and art. Museums and old churches for the art lover and a worldly experience for the family are all part of a visit to San Gimignano. Shops and restaurants abound and there are several hotels in or nearby the old village. We stayed in Pisa, drove to San Gimignano from there. Another short drive and we found ourselves in Firenze (Florence). Vineyards and natural beauty surround the village and enhance the total experience. It's a great day trip from either Pisa or Florence and only takes a few hours (less if you are more familiar with driving in Italy than I was) to get there from either city. To learn more about the history, shops, restaurants, and art, you can visit this site: http://www.sangimignano.com/sstoriai.htm When touring around the countryside it is always a good idea to have some bottled water with you. Not only in Italy but Europe in general. The water is generally consumable but remember that European countries don't necessarily have the same standards as the United States when it comes to water additives and so on. Also, be sure to convert your money before you go traveling around the country. As part of the European Union, Italy also uses the Euro and it may be a little difficult to find places to convert your money in some of the smaller villages dotted across the countryside. Part of the experience of visiting San Gimignano was the drive from Pisa. The countryside is so beautiful that the drive alone creates a sense of relaxation and calm. Planning this trip from Pisa was simple. We just picked up a map, made sure we had some money exchanged, grabbed a little grub for the trip, and away we went! I've added a few links below to help you plan and keep your memories! |
